Askew has been active in the Aotearoa Hip Hop scene for over a decade. Although his initial introduction to the scene was through MC-ing, Askew is better known for his Graffiti art.
As a teenager, Friday & Saturday nights would bring the now legendary cyphers at Ponsonby Community Centre. Askew established himself quickly as having an appetite for battling and drunken freestyling. His career continued, but Askew found himself following a new path within Hip Hop and life. Giving up all drugs and alcohol and dedicating himself to his graffiti art, Askew followed a 6 year absence from picking up a Mic or even ciphered amongst friends. During these years he co-counded various projects including Distruptiv, Disrupt Magazine & Disrupt Gallery.
Now having reached a comfortable plateau within aerosol art, Askew once again has taken up the mic. He has re-establishing himself amongst a new, far more competitive MC scene. Credit is due to the likes of Tourettes and Cyphanetik of Breakin Wreckwordz for reigniting this flame and also the amount of local talent including Mareko and Con-Psy who's fresh and intelligent take both fuelled his ambition to return to the music. His solo material can be heard on both of the Fuck Music compilations (Breakin Wreckwordz), the Savage and Mareko Blood on the BBQ mixtape (Dawnraid), The 44 Stalkland Mixtape and all 3 Disruptiv Mixtapes (Disruptiv Music). |
